The internet was left stunned after numerous images surfaced online showing what appeared to be Indian Aadhaar cards issued in the identities of Elon Musk and Sam Altman, generated using ChatGPT’s new image generation capabilities.
ChatGPT’s GPT-4o, which has already generated over 700 million images since its launch, initially gained fame for producing Studio Ghibli-style portraits which has taken social media by storm. However, it is now under scrutiny as users exploit its native image generation features to create fake Indian identification documents, raising serious concerns about misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

While the nascent stage of generative AI faced inconsistencies with replicating facial features and body parts such as fingers, it is no doubt that the continuous machine learning process is now producing scarily accurate generated content.

Screenshots circulating on social media revealed users asking ChatGPT to create Aadhaar and PAN card replicas, complete with fabricated names, addresses, identification numbers, and even QR codes. A test using the chatbot's image tool produced Aadhaar-like cards that were difficult to distinguish from genuine ones at first glance, with layouts, fonts, and formats appearing alarmingly accurate.

OpenAI, in its GPT-4o system card, has admitted that the new model, which uses an autoregressive image generation system natively embedded within ChatGPT, poses a greater risk compared to previous external models like DALL·E. Unlike DALL·E, which is a diffusion model, GPT-4o’s new system allows more nuanced and detailed creations directly from text prompts, introducing risks previously unseen in AI-generated images.

Historical Figures join the lot!
As is the norm on social media, once a novel idea is produced, the rest of the population pick up on the trend and emulate it, albeit with their own twist. Indian mathematician and astronomer is the latest one to be issued a fake Aadhar Card and PAN Card, with a home address at Zero Colony, Zeropur.
In retrospect, one may ponder that man and machine have come full circle - Aryabhatta’s contributions to conceptualizing ‘Zero’ - an integral part in Binary Coding - forming the groundwork for ChatGPT.

Experts warn that while Aadhaar’s backend system allows for some degree of verification through matching text and facial data, verifying the authenticity of other government IDs like PAN cards and driving licences could prove more challenging. "Aadhaar is relatively easier to track, but PAN and DLs don’t have facial databases, making them vulnerable to tampering," said Wriju Ray, Chief Business Officer at IDfy.
Rohit Kumar, Founding Partner at The Quantum Hub, stressed the need for robust safeguards, including denying harmful outputs and embedding digital watermarks or provenance metadata to counter identity theft risks as reported by the Mint.
As AI keeps getting inculcated into numerous daily activities, the human population continues to fiddle and experiment with generative technology - when shall this reach the summit? Maybe that’s a question for ChatGPT to answer.
