The Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla has praised the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) system of India and the whole world keen to learn from it. The speaker was addressing the ( Customs & Indirect Taxes ) Officers as part of their training.

He stated that “GST has introduced the system of “One Nation, One Tax” in our country and entire world is keen to learn from it.”

Speaking at an Appreciation Course in Parliamentary Processes and Procedures for IRS ( Customs & Indirect Taxes ) Officer Trainees at the Parliament House complex, Mr. Birla noted that India’s tax policies have made it a preferred investment destination worldwide.

The Speaker praised the consistent attempts by Parliament and the government to heighten the tax system, which he described as one of the most transparent and reliable globally.

He also lauded the contributions of IRS officers in strengthening the economy and attracting international investors. The Speaker also spoke about India's economic progress, staging the exponential growth in the country’s budget from ₹170 crores in 1947 to over ₹40 lakh crores today, accrediting it to the dedication of civil servants.

The speaker addressed a diverse group of 73 Officer Trainees ( OTs ) from the 74th and 75th batches of IRS ( Customs & Indirect Taxes ) and five Officer Trainees from Royal Bhutan Customs.

He stressed the importance of honesty, transparency, and efficiency in their roles and  asked them to view their service as a mission to drive national progress, not only by increasing revenue but also by promoting ethical practices. During the session, the Speaker led the officers in reading the Preamble to the Constitution.

The session began with a welcome address by Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh and concluded with a vote of thanks by Joint Secretary Shri Gaurav Goyal. Principal Director General of NACIN, Shri Gaigongdin Panmei, was also present at the event.
