The Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI ) court in Ahmedabad has convicted two former Income Tax Officers who have been found guilty of demanding and accepting bribes for settling Income Tax Returns ( ITR ). They’ve been sentenced to three years in prison each. The court also ordered them to pay a substantial fine.

Presided over by the Special Judge for CBI cases in Ahmedabad, the verdict marks a decisive legal action against corruption within the tax department.

The case in question involved the conviction of two income tax officers who were found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe. The sentencing included three years of Rigorous Imprisonment for each offender, along with a fine of Rs. 50,000/- each. Their activities pertained to settling ITR for the Assessment year 2009-10 in favour of a specific complainant, highlighting the severity of their misconduct and breach of public trust.

The complaint was lodged on 19th August 2011, prompting the CBI to launch an investigation into the matter.. They wanted Rs. 1,75,000/- to change the tax returns in favour of the complainant. The officers were caught red-handed accepting Rs. 50,000/- as part of the bribe.

The CBI did a thorough investigation and proved the officers were guilty and thus, the former public servants were convicted for their wrongdoing.
