A diamond trader in the Katargam area was robbed of Rs 8 crore in cash by an impostor posing as an income-tax officer. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, causing concern within the community.
The trader encountered the impostor, who identified himself as ‘I-T officer’ Ramkumar Yadav, after retrieving cash from his firm’s locker. The impostor, armed with a firearm, halted the trader’s car and took four individuals from the firm hostage at gunpoint.
The perpetrator coerced the car’s driver to continue driving, releasing two hostages near the Ved-Variyav bridge before fleeing with the car and the remaining cash. The firm’s identity and the rightful owner of the cash remain undisclosed pending police investigation.
The Katargam police and crime branch are diligently reviewing CCTV footage for leads, with one camera capturing the suspect wearing a cap and carrying a bag.
Officials are investigating how one individual managed to abduct four persons and any potential involvement of individuals affiliated with the diamond firm in the robbery.
Despite attempts to gather more information, contacting DCP Zone-3 Pinakin Parmar was unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
