A fake notification purportedly issued by the Bar Council of India ( BCI ) regarding a mandatory minimum fee structure for advocates has been widely circulated on social media platforms, causing confusion among legal professionals and the public.

The fraudulent document, which claims to set minimum fees for various legal services, is yet to be addressed by the BCI, as the council has not issued any official response or clarification regarding the matter.

The fake notification, which appeared to be an official BCI document, listed detailed fee structures for legal consultations, court marriages, document drafting, and litigation services. It also included a section on additional costs such as court fees and notary charges.

The document bore the BCI’s official seal (in digital imprint) and was dated February 15, 2025, with an effective date of March 1, 2025. However, legal experts have raised doubts about its authenticity, citing inconsistencies and the lack of any official announcement from the BCI.

The absence of a response from the BCI has left many advocates and clients uncertain about the legitimacy of the notification. “Without an official clarification from the BCI, it is difficult to determine whether this is a genuine directive or a hoax,” said a practicing advocate in Mumbai.

The legal community has expressed concern over the potential misuse of such fake documents, which could lead to disputes over legal fees and undermine trust in the profession.

Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions to the fake notification, with many users calling for the BCI to issue a statement to clear the air. Legal experts have advised the public to exercise caution and avoid relying on unverified sources for information. “Until the BCI confirms or denies the notification, it is best to treat it as suspect,” said a Senior Lawyer in Kerala.

The incident is another one of the growing challenges of misinformation in the digital age, particularly in sensitive areas such as legal services. While the BCI’s silence has added to the confusion, the legal community hopes that the council will soon address the issue and provide clarity to prevent further misinformation from spreading.

For now, advocates and clients are advised to rely on official BCI communications and verified channels, like trusted news sources and official websites such as the e-gazette portal for any updates and regulatory changes.
