FEMA violation: ED Raid in Empuraan producer Gokulam Gopalan's office

The current raid, according to ED officials, has nothing to do with the film dispute and is just concerned with looking for FEMA Violations

As part of an ongoing investigation into suspected violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched the Gokulam Group's Chennai office on Friday. The ED Kochi team, working with their Chennai counterparts, led the search operation, which was conducted at the group's Kodambakkam location.

Since 2023, the ED has been investigating the Gokulam Group, which is led by Gokulam Gopalan. Gopalan is a well-known personality in the entertainment and business worlds and has already been questioned multiple times in relation to the case. His business interests include sports, hospitality, filmmaking, chit funds, and finance.

Gopalan is also the producer of the contentious movie Empuraan, which recently caused BJP members to become outraged and resulted in the removal of a number of sequences. ED officials have underlined, however, that the current raid is just concerned with the investigation of FEMA infractions and has nothing to do with the film dispute.

This raid may cause more controversies as it took place on the eve of the conflict on L2 Empuran.

As the movie was released worldwide, business dealings abroad or has travelled overseas can testify, the government likes to keep a tight leash on currency taken out of the country. The Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) control the illegal flow of foreign currency across Indian borders.
