The Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) has issued Notification No. 18/2025-Customs dated March 20, 2025, amending the long-standing Notification No. 9/2012-Customs to provide relaxed tolerance limits for the import of cut and polished diamonds. The move aims to align customs norms with industry practices and reduce procedural friction for diamond importers.
Earlier, under Notification No. 11/2013-Customs, which amended the 2012 notification, importers were allowed only minimal variances:
- ± 0.01 mm in height and circumference, and
- ± 1 cent in weight.

However, the new amendment significantly expands and clarifies these tolerances by introducing shape-specific parameters:
- For round-shaped diamonds: ± 0.05 mm in diameter is now allowed.
- For diamonds of other shapes: ± 0.07 mm in length and breadth is permitted.
- For all shapes:
- ± 0.01 mm in height and
- ± 1 cent in weight remains applicable.

According to the notification, the change has been made in the public interest under Section 25(1) of the Customs Act, 1962.
