Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Finance Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha today. This is one of the most important bills in the Budget process. It includes the government’s financial plans for the year 2025–26, such as changes in taxes and how money will be spent. Once passed by Parliament, the Finance Bill becomes law and allows the government to carry out its financial proposals.
The Finance Bill is based on the Interim Budget that was presented on February 1, 2025. Since a general election is expected later this year, the government has presented only a temporary or “interim” budget. The Finance Bill still needs to be passed before March 31, which is the end of the current financial year, to make sure the government can continue its spending and tax collections from April 1 onward.
Along with the Finance Bill, several other important matters will be taken up in the Lok Sabha today:
Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, will give a statement on how the government has acted on the suggestions made by the Standing Committee on Finance in its 1st Report on Demands for Grants (2024–25) related to the Ministry of Finance.
