Fraud Alert by CBIC - Indian Customs - Fraud Alert - Sends SMS - Fake Online Trader Scam - taxscan

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued a warning regarding fraudulent online trader scams. This is the government’s and officials’ subsequent cautionary announcement after the alert about counterfeit Income Tax Return (ITR) refund messages.

The Finance Ministry tweeted that “Don’t fall prey to Fraudulent Calls, Emails, Messages and Social Media Posts claiming to be from Indian Customs and demanding payment of customs duty in personal bank accounts.”

The Indian customs authorities do not engage in calling or sending messages for customs duty payments. Every communication from the Indian Customs includes a unique Document Identification Number (DIN), which can be authenticated at www.cbic.gov.in. Officials have advised that if you encounter such messages or calls, kindly report the matter to your local police.

The scammers are sending fake messages that “your package has been received and you have to pay a small amount of customs duty to collect”. While the wording might vary, the content can remain identical. Scammers have the capability to counterfeit the DIN number, yet individuals should cross-check the DIN on the CBIC website to confirm its authenticity.

Regarding the Income Tax Return (ITR) refunds, it is recommended to refrain from clicking on any links included in the message. If you happen to receive messages urging you to disclose bank details, OTPs, or any sensitive information that could lead to financial loss or identity theft, it is crucial not to respond.

Additionally, it is advisable to communicate with your designated tax professionals regarding the refund status, or alternatively, personally verify the information on the income tax portal.
