The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has introduced a new requirement for residents of the national capital, mandating the geotagging of properties for those seeking tax exemptions. This directive, applicable to all types of properties, was announced on a Tuesday.

According to the MCD, property owners who do not geotag their properties by January 31 will lose the opportunity to avail a 10% rebate on lump sum advance tax payments in the upcoming financial year. The MCD is actively encouraging property owners to promptly complete the geo tagging process, emphasising the significance of this initiative in contributing to the overall development of Delhi.

Geotagging, in this context, involves the assignment of a unique Latitude-Longitude coordinate to a property on a Geographic Information System (GIS) map. Property owners can easily fulfil this requirement by specifying their current location against a Unique Property Identification Code (UPIC). To facilitate this process, the MCD has provided tools such as the MCD App and the civic body’s online portal, allowing property owners to independently geotag their properties.

The MCD underscored the positive impact of taxpayer-driven geotagging, emphasising that it would lead to the location-specific identification of individual properties, thereby enhancing the efficient delivery of MCD services. While MCD officers were previously responsible for geotagging many non-residential properties, the MCD has now shifted the responsibility onto taxpayers, clarifying that properties already geotagged need not undergo the process again.

Furthermore, the MCD urged property owners who are not registered with the MCD property tax portal to complete the registration process, generate a UPIC, and geotag their properties. In line with this, the MCD announced plans to initiate tax recovery measures, including legal actions against defaulters who fail to settle their taxes by the specified deadline of January 31. This multifaceted approach aims to ensure compliance with the geotagging requirement and streamline property tax processes in the national capital.
