A fresh initiative has been proposed by the Central Government to recruit young professionals specializing in Law and Accountancy to support the litigation efforts of the Income Tax Department. These professionals will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 40,000. The scheme is initally for 2 years and will extend further if it’s successful.

This marks the inaugural effort by the income tax department with the aim of enticing young individuals to pursue careers in law and accountancy. The scheme intends to commence with the recruitment of 50 professionals who are below the age of 35.

These professionals will be assigned to assist departmental representatives in handling cases at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). They have to assist the representatives in conducting research for the cases.

Currently, there are 63 benches of ITAT spread across 27 states, responsible for adjudicating appeals. The ITAT serves as the second appellate tribunal where aggrieved parties can lodge their appeals if they are dissatisfied with the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals)’s rulings.

This scheme aims to generate fresh employment prospects for young professionals specializing in law and accountancy. Moreover, it is expected to alleviate the workload of departmental representatives. The recruited professionals will be responsible for conducting research and preparing background work related to the relevant appeals, much like practicing under the guidance of a Senior Advocate in litigation.

The application notification is set to be released on August 25. According to the scheme’s provisions, 12 professionals will be stationed in Mumbai, 9 in Delhi, and 5 in Gujarat. The allocation of professionals to these locations will be determined based on the volume of cases in the respective benches of the tribunal. Interested professionals are advised to wait until August 25 to submit their applications.
