GST: An Overview of Tax Rates fixed for Goods [Read the Complete Chart]

No Tax on Food Grains, Milk and other articles of Daily use; Rate on Gold, Textiles Not Fixed.

The 14th GST Council meeting on Thursday, held at Srinagar decided a Four Slab rate for goods. GST rates for certain goods like textile, footwear, biris, precious metals, etc. are yet to be decided by the GST Council.

The Council, while approving the GST rates for goods at nil rate, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, kept most food items out of the purview of GST. The rates prescribed for some important items as per the schedule published by the Government is below.

Goods Exempted from GST Net

Food grains, Milk and other articles of daily use are taxable at nil rate under the new tax regime. Bindi, vermilion, jiggery, glass bangles, handlooms, hearing aids and handmade musical instruments are all exempted under the GST. The other goods having exemption includes eggs, curd, lassi, unpacked paneer, natural honey, fresh vegetables, fruits, atta, besan, maida, vegetable oil, Prasad, common salt, contraceptive, bread, stamp, judicial documents, printed books, bangles  etc. A total of 7% of items have been kept zero rated.

Goods attracting 5% GST

While jaggery is exempt under GST, cane sugar and beet sugar are in the 5% tax slab. Bio gas plant, wind mills and kerosene lantern and coal will also be under the 5% tax rate. Tea, coffee, edible oil, skimmed milk powder, milk food for babies, condensed milk, packed paneer, newsprint, umbrella, PDS kerosene, LPG, broom, fish fillet, cream, frozen vegetables, spices, pizza bread, juice, sabudana, coal, medicine are also taxable at a lower rate of 5%.

Goods Taxable at 12%

Mobile phones, fountain pen ink, tooth powder, incense sticks, feeding bottles, Braille paper, children’s colouring books, umbrellas, pencil sharpeners, tractors, bicycles, contact lenses, spectacle lenses, utensils, sports goods, fishing rods, combs, pencils and hand paintings have been placed under the 12% tax rate under GST.

Goods attracting 18% GST

The goods which will fall under 18% tax rate include helmets, LPG stoves, nuclear reactors, clocks, military weapons, electronic toys and plastic buttons. Other items included in this category are, flavored refined sugar, pasta, cornflakes, pastries and cakes, preserved vegetables, jams, sauces, soups, ice cream, instant food mixes, mineral water, tissues, envelopes, tampons, note books, steel products, printed circuits, camera, speakers and monitors etc.

Goods Taxable at higher rate, i.e 28%

The items which have been put in the highest tax slab of 28% include aerated drinks, perfumes, shaving creams, after-shave lotions, deodarants, clothing of furskin, razor blades, cars, revolvers, pistols. As per the schedule, more than 200 products appear in the 28% tax slab. Items like chewing gum, molasses, chocolate not containing cocoa, waffles and wafers coated with chocolate, pan masala, aerated water, paint, deodorants, hair shampoo, dye, sunscreen, wallpaper, ceramic tiles, water heater, dishwashers weighing machine, washing machine, ATM, vending machines, vacuum cleaner, shavers, hair clippers, automobiles, motorcycles and aircraft for personal use are also in the list.

However, the GST rates for certain goods such as textile, footwear, biris, precious metals including Gold, etc. are yet to be decided by the Council.
