Tax experts have consistently raised issues concerning the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Portal for several hours. Today, which marks August 11, 2023, is the final day for submitting GSTR-1. Social media platform Twitter is inundated with grievances directed at the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) through tagging.

Despite the GSTN’s assertion that the GST portal is functioning properly, tax professionals are encountering issues while trying to file. Reports indicated that the portal is automatically logging users out, and even after multiple attempts to log in, they are unable to access the summary. This is the common issue raised by the professionals.

Form GSTR-1 is a monthly/quarterly Statement of Outward Supplies to be furnished by all normal and casual registered taxpayers making outward supplies of goods and services or both and contains details of outward supplies of goods and services.

Every registered taxable person, other than an input service distributor/composition taxpayer/ persons liable to deduct tax under Section 51 / persons liable to collect tax under Section 52 of Goods and Services Act is required to file Form GSTR-1, the details of outward supplies of goods and/or services during a tax period, electronically on the GST Portal.

Furthermore, the GST Council has proposed an extension of the GST registration cancellation deadline until August 31st, 2023. Taxpayers and professionals attempting to undertake this process are also encountering similar difficulties.

It is understandable that today marks the deadline, and it is fairly common for professionals to wait until the due date to file returns. Nevertheless, it is the responsibility of the Ministry, board, and GSTN to address these challenges and ensure a seamless process for filing returns.
