GSTN issues Advisory on Archival of GST Returns data on GST Portal

With the introduction of the Archives feature on the GST portal, now the taxpayers can conveniently access data dating back to 2017

As per the latest notification on September 24th, 2024, the Goods and Services Tax Network ( GSTN ) has updated certain policies related to the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) Data Archival of GST Returns Data on GST Portal. According to the latest update, the data for the view of taxpayers to be retained for seven years only.

So after the expiry of seven years the data would not be available for the taxpayers for viewing. Therefore, the same data policy is being implemented on the GST portal as well. Thus, data regarding the returns shall only be available up to 7 years for the taxpayers.

After the expiry of 7 years the data will not be available to the taxpayers.

The GST portal underwent many changes on May 3rd, 2024, this update also introduced several new options such as features like ‘Archives’. Accordingly, on 01st August 2024 return filed from July 2017 has been archived and on 01st September 2024, data for August 2017 has been archived.

The notice also mentions that the data archival is going to be a monthly activity. So for instance, if a person requires a date regarding returns of September 2017 then the person will have to access the data before 01 October, 2024, as the data shall be taken down from the GST portal and so on and so forth.

So in order to avoid such complications taxpayers are advised to download the relevant data from the GST portal for any further reference, if required.

Hence, if required, please download and save September 2017 return data, as the same will not be available on the GST portal after 30th September 2024.

Steps to access Archives on GST Portal:

  • Go to www.gst.gov.in
  • On the Home screen, click the News and Updates menu
  • Click View Archives
  • Select Year and month
  • All archives will be shown for such period
  • You can click each archive and view it.
  • Also, you can filter it based on it’s type.

All these improvements can contribute to improving the transparency and accessibility of taxpayers. Now with the introduction of the GST Archival facility on the GST Portal the taxpayers are empowering users with valuable insights into the evolution of GST regulations and policies.
