In a recent development, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has introduced a new functionality on the GST Portal that enables taxpayers to geocode their principal place of business address. The move is aimed at enhancing the accuracy of address details in GSTN records and streamlining the address location and verification process.

According to an advisory issued by the GSTN on February 24, 2023, the system-generated geocoded address can be accessed under the Services/Registration tab in the FO portal. Taxpayers can either accept it or update it as per their case’s requirements. In cases where the system-generated geocoded address is not available, taxpayers can directly update it.

The geocoded address details will be saved separately under the “Principal Geocoded” tab on the portal, which can be viewed under My profile>>Place of Business tab.

The functionality is available for normal, composition, SEZ units, SEZ developers, ISD, and casual taxpayers who are active, cancelled, and suspended, and it will gradually be opened for other types of taxpayers.

The GSTN has emphasised that the address appearing on the registration certificate can only be changed through the core amendment process, and this geocoding functionality would not impact previously saved address records.

The new feature is currently available for taxpayers registered in Delhi and Haryana, and it will gradually be opened for taxpayers from other States and UTs.

Overall, the GSTN hopes that this functionality will streamline the process and ensure greater accuracy in GSTN records. This move is expected to be welcomed by taxpayers who will benefit from a more efficient and streamlined process.
