The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has released a new advisory to applicants for GST registration in Sikkim, incorporating biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification as a step in the application process.

This is a follow-up to the recent addition to Rule 8 of the CGST Rules, 2017, wherein applicants can be identified on the GST common portal based on data analysis and risk parameters backed by biometric authentication, a live photo, and original document verification uploaded with the application.

The functionality will come into effect from May 1, 2025 and has been rolled out completely in Sikkim. After an applicant files Form GST REG-01, they will be sent an email with a link for OTP-based Aadhaar verification (enabling them to continue under the current process) or a link to schedule an appointment at a specified GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) for biometric-based Aadhaar verification and physical document verification. Applicants who are sent the appointment link need to choose a time slot and will be sent a confirmation email with the planned visit.

The biometric verification and authentication procedure will be applicable to all mandatory individuals mentioned in the GST application. Notably, the applicant has to schedule the appointment booking and biometric verification within the maximum allowed time frame as per their intimation email; only then will the Application Reference Number (ARN) be created.

The working days and timings of GSKs will be as per the guidelines provided by the concerned state administration. This improved verification process will further enhance the integrity and security of the GST registration system, minimizing the risks of identity abuse and fake registrations.
