GSTN Technical Glitches will be resolved by October End: GoM

The meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Wednesday announced that the technology glitches in the new Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) would be fixed by the end of this month.

A meeting of the GoM, led by Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, to review IT-related issues in GST implementation and held a day-long discussion with representatives from Infosys, the company which is providing IT support for the new tax system.

According to the ministers, there are 48 issues that require resolution. However, Modi who was addressing the media here on Wednesday did not specify what these issues were. ‘The system that is in place for filing GST returns has the capability of handling 1.3 lakh returns an hour,” Modi said reiterating that all the existing technological challenges would be addressed soon.

For the month of July, as many as 52 lakh dealers have filed their returns, but the detailed GSTR1 has been filed by only 33.43 lakh dealers. Modi added that GSTN would send reminder text messages to 20 lakh businesses, which are yet to file GST returns for July.

The GoM denied the chances for extending deadline for filing GSTR1 since it had already been extended thrice. The last date to file GSTR 1 is October 10. In all, 90 lakh taxpayers are registered in the GST Network.

The Group of Ministers will seek the help of Infosys to depute a technical person in each state to resolve technical issues stage-by-stage. Even though the company has at present deputed people to co-ordinate with the state tax administration, they would ask them to depute additional support staff, Modi added.
