Global Trade Research Initiative ( GTRI )  urges simplifying Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs ( CBIC ) notifications on customs duties for better industry understanding. The economic think tank emphasised that the complex language hinders over a lakh importing firms from grasping crucial details.

GTRI suggests CBIC involve communication experts for clearer notifications, benefiting both industry comprehension and streamlined business processes without extra government costs.

Ajay Srivastava, GTRI's Co-Founder, stresses CBIC's vital role in notifying import duties. GTRI proposes using simpler language for transparency in CBIC's notifications, highlighting the challenges posed by intricate calculations, especially for smaller businesses.

Using simpler language, GTRI argued, would not only aid industry comprehension but also enhance transparency in CBIC's tariff and other notifications.

GTRI used the example of a company importing tennis shoes, facing a total duty of 63.43 per cent, to illustrate the complexity. The think tank recommends CBIC to adopt straightforward language in notifications, avoiding cross-referencing, and clearly state relevant products and duties to eliminate confusion. They suggest a comprehensive approach similar to DGFT, compiling all duty-related information into a single notification.

Implementing these suggestions, GTRI concluded, would significantly enhance CBIC notifications, emphasising the importance of clear, direct communication for compliance and ease of interpretation in customs matters.
