In a targeted operation based on actionable intelligence, Guwahati Customs officers have made a significant seizure of gold bars and coins from an individual aboard the Guwahati-Bangalore Express. The illicit haul, weighing a total of 1997.96 grams/ 19.9kg, was found in the possession of the individual without any valid documentation.

The total value of the seized gold in this case amounts to a staggering ₹1.28 crore, underscoring the substantial scale of the illegal activity intercepted by the customs authorities.

Following the seizure, the individual in possession of the contraband has been detained for further investigation. This development marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and illicit trade in precious metals, which pose significant threats to the country’s economic integrity and security.

Recently, the Mumbai Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has arrested two individuals believed to be instrumental handlers within the gold smuggling network. The arrest took place at a hotel in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, following the seizure of 4 kg of illicit gold, valued at ₹2.59 crore, at the Mumbai International Airport on January 16.

Also, based on specific intelligence inputs, the Delhi Customs Preventive unit undertook legal action on January 20th and 21st, 2024, targeting the illicit importation and storage of foreign-origin cigarettes.
