A Huge GST Fraud exposed senior officials, transporters, and mafia allegedly causing the loss of thousands of crores every month to the Government. The reports of industry representatives revealed the illegal transportation of High-value goods which includes Pan masala, areca nut, supari, gutka, sandalwood, iron scrap, coal, and other products without proper invoices.
Sunil Atree, the President of the All-India Goods Transport Association pointed out that these operations largely relied on fraudulent GST numbers and forged documents. Atree also pointed out that these operations to evade GST, caused enormous losses to the Government.

Atree also alleged that the Syndicate operates with the backing of senior GST officials and the mafia. He also stated that certain transporters were accused of paying hefty bribes to secure illegal protection and information about GST enforcement activities and they transport goods with forged documents.
Atree also revealed that the Invoices were deliberately created for amounts under Rs. 50,000 per truckload to escape mandatory documentation. He further stated that the companies involved in the fraud change their names every six months in order to escape from detection.
Atree also stated that the transporters abiding by the law were subjected to harassment by the criminal syndicates. He added that illegal activities caused freight rates to drop which created pressure on legalised businesses.
He also revealed that several transport companies have been identified as active participants and the top operators handle hundreds of trucks each day with enormous volumes of goods.
Atree provided names of top companies involved in the fraud and alleged that these companies leased vehicles with payment of Rs. 15-20 lakhs from independent truck owners for illegal operations.

The Association President also sought intervention from industry and the government to eradicate criminal syndicates and also requested to address the corruption within GST enforcement.
Atree also wrote to the GST intelligence wing and to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman. Huge concern arises over GST compliance and reliance on GST authorities, as the nation awaits the budget with a week away.
