The Income Tax Department, in a final warning to taxpayers and PAN Card-holders, recently tweeted on its Official Twitter handle that, “As per Income-tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not come under the exempt category, to link their PAN with Aadhaar before 31.03.2023.”

The tweet also said that “From 01.04.2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative.”

“Please don’t delay, link it today!”, the department further appealed to those yet to link their PAN Cards with Aadhar.

However, the taxpayers and stakeholders who approach the concerned authorities for linking their Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) with the Aadhar UID are served with a hefty fine of Rs. 1000 whereas the charges for applying for PAN is only Rs. 93 (Excluding Goods and Services tax) for Indian communication address and Rs. 864 (Excluding Goods and Services tax) for foreign communication address. Payment of the application fee can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net banking.

If you are unsure of your PAN-Aadhar linking status, visit the official PAN Aadhaar Linking Check website to verify the same. You need to have your PAN, Aadhar number and Date of Birth handy to link and verify the status.

Many taxpayers are triggered by the unusual levy of late fees by the Department and expressed their concerns on Twitter. Many stakeholders were also unable to complete the application to link PAN with Aadhar in spite of paying the fee of Rs. 1000. Some were also unable to complete the fee payment yesterday due to some technical issues.

One of the stakeholders experiencing technical issues got a reply to his tweet that said “sir we are facing technical issues while linking, if the same error continues till 31st march 2023, then who will be responsible for this.”

The reply by the official twitter handle of the Income Tax Department stated, “We request you to share your details (along with PAN & mobile number) with us at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in for our team to get in touch with you for assistance.”
