During a raid on the home of former BJP MLA Harvansh Singh Rathore, the Income Tax Department discovered and confiscated gold, crores of dollars in cash, and benami imported cars. Since Sunday, the Income Tax department has been conducting raids on the homes of Mr. Rathore and former Sagar councilor Rajesh Kesharwani on suspicion of tax cheating totaling crores.
According to officials, the raids turned around Rs 155 crore in tax evasion. Along with gold and silver jewelry that would increase in value by crores, they have also seized Rs 3 crore in cash. According to sources, Mr. Kesharwani, who operated a beedi business alongside Mr. Rathore, avoided taxes of Rs 140 crore on his own, and the raid turned up relevant paperwork.
The officers also discovered a number of benami imported cars in Mr. Kesharwani’s residence that were not registered to any Kesharwani family members. The Income Tax agency has asked the Transport department for information on the vehicles and is looking into how they got them.
