Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged the Income Tax Department to address a citizen's grievance regarding a delayed tax refund.
On October 4, she tagged the department in response to a complaint posted by Rahul Dubey on 'X', highlighting that his wife, Archana Dubey, is still waiting for her tax refund of Rs 52,000 for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

Despite repeated follow-ups, the refund has not been received, and Dubey has been vocal about the issue, tagging multiple authorities including the Finance Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office.
In her response, Sitharaman asked the Income Tax Department to attend to the complaint promptly, saying, "Hopefully, you are attending to this."
In response, the Income Tax Dept tweeted on X that,
“As informed by our team, they have been in touch with you regarding your concerns and have apprised you regarding the current status of your issue.”
Earlier, Sitharaman had emphasised the need for more taxpayer-friendly practices within the department, including simplifying the language used in tax notices and ensuring fair treatment to all assesses.
"The language used in tax notices should be easy for the average taxpayer to understand," she had noted in August, stressing that tax communications should be accessible rather than intimidating.

Sitharaman also reiterated the need for consistent and fair practices in tax enforcement, encouraging the Income Tax Department to make the experience more approachable for citizens. "The experience of filing returns should be the same on the first day as it is on the last day. Enforcement measures should be a last resort, and any action taken should be proportionate," she added.
