The Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT ) has issued a new format for Form ITR-U (Updated Return), allowing taxpayers to submit updated income tax returns under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

The revised Form ITR-U enables taxpayers to update their income tax returns within 48 months from the end of the corresponding assessment year. The form can be used by individuals and entities that want to correct omissions or errors in earlier returns or to submit returns for assessment years when they had not submitted any return at all.

The ITR-U form records details like PAN, Aadhaar, assessment year, filing status of return, and grounds for revised income update, e.g., failure to report income, errant heads of income, or decrease in carried forward losses. It also has spaces for calculating the revised income, taxes payable or refundable, additional tax under Section 140B, and reliefs availed.

The most important feature of this update is the incorporation of elaborate fields for head-wise reporting of extra income, tax calculation, and payment validation. It also lays down the deadline within which the revised return is being furnished, whether within 12, 24, 36, or 48 months since this decides the amount of extra tax liability (between 25% to 50% or more, depending on the delay).
