A Chartered Accountant ( CA ) recently took to social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to raise concern over the non-processing of an Income Tax Return ( ITR ) filed in July 2024.

The tax expert requested accountability by naming the Income Tax Department since, after filing the tax return about a year ago and voicing three grievances, the issue has not been resolved.

The CA stated that the assessee is an employee of a Central Government autonomous body, yet the return continues to remain unprocessed for an extended period. The social media post read:

The official Income Tax Department handle noticed the post and quickly responded, seeking for more information for escalation:

Please share your grievance acknowledgement number to enable us to escalate your issue with the team concerned….. We have forwarded your grievance acknowledgement numbers to the team concerned. They are looking into this.”

Although the department admitted the problem and promised that it had been forwarded to the appropriate team, the incident has once again sought attention to the increasing issues of professionals and taxpayers about processing delays in returns, particularly when several complaints remain unresolved for months.

In addition to being inconvenient for assessees, especially those who expect their refunds, such delays weaken trust in the department’s grievance redressal mechanism.  Incidents like these serve as a reminder of the need for fast resolution and improved communication, particularly as the government keeps focusing on improving the income tax portal’s efficiency and transparency.

Recently, a daughter of a senior citizen raised the issue of ITR processing delay for 2 years. The post shared by her  revealed that her father’s ITR, filed nearly two years ago, is yet to be processed.
