The Income Tax Department has informed that Income Tax Returns (ITR) filing has crossed over 5 crores till 27th July 2023 and over 2.69 crore ITRs are processed too.
The department wrote in their twitter that “We express our gratitude to the taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs), 3 days early this year, compared to the preceding year!”
As of July 27th this year, it has been reported that more than 5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed for the Assessment Year (A.Y.) 2023-24, in comparison to the same period last year when it was until July 30th. Out of these 5.03 crore ITRs filed, over 4.46 crore have already been e-verified, which accounts for more than 88% of the total ITRs filed.
Among the e-verified ITRs, over 2.69 crore have been processed successfully. To aid taxpayers in their ITR filing, tax payment, and other related services, the Income Tax department’s help desk operates 24×7. The department also offers support through various channels, including calls, live chats, Webex sessions, and social media platforms.
The department assured that support will be available until July 31, 2023, including weekends (Saturday and Sunday). They also strongly encourage those who have not filed their ITR for AY 2023-24 to do so as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute rush.
There has been no indication from the Ministry or CBDT officials regarding an extension of the ITR due date. The Sales Tax Bar Association and Gujarat Tax Advocates Association have made representations to the Ministry, requesting them to take the current national situation into account and extend the due date. Besides the prevailing natural challenges, the Income Tax portal is also posing significant difficulties in filing ITR on time.
