The Income Tax Department has reported the new milestone that, as of July 30, 2023, more than 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) had been filed. Up till 6:30 p.m. 30th July, nearly 26.76 lakh ITRs have been submitted. The last date to file the ITR is 31st July 2023, i.e., today.

The department added that, as of 6.30 p.m., they have seen more than 1.30 crore successful logins on the e-filing system. Many tax filers have concurrently reported experiencing difficulties with the income tax portal as a result of server downtime.

The help desk of the income tax department is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to assist taxpayers with ITR filing, tax payment, and other associated services. Also the department offers support over the phone, live chat, WebEx meetings, and social media.

There has been no indication from the Ministry or CBDT officials regarding an extension of the ITR due date. The Sales Tax Bar Association and Gujarat Tax Advocates Association have made representations to the Ministry, requesting them to take the current national situation into account and extend the due date. Besides the prevailing natural challenges, the Income Tax portal is also posing significant difficulties in filing ITR on time.

Also, the All India Cost Management Accountants Association (AICMAA) made a request to the finance ministry for a permanent extension of the Income Tax Returns (ITR) filing due date from 31st July to 31st August.

The association put forward some concerns which has to be considered by the ministry on behalf of all the taxpayers and professionals:

  1. Although ITR Forms duly notified well in advance in order to enable filing of returns from the beginning of the ensuing Assessment Year, but the final version of JSON Schema for ITR for the Assessment Year 2023-2024 have been enabled at the start or mid of June.
  2. TDS/TCS statements filing due dates are till 31st of May for the last quarter of the previous year, therefore Form 16 and Form 16A are available to tax filers only after that Tax payers will not be able to file until and unless TDS is reflected in 26AS.
  3. AIS is itself sufficient for the majority of taxpayers to file ITR, however. AIS is not impeccable and hence needed to be attentive & carefully consider all those figures being reflected thereon.
