With an aim to safeguard the domestic industry, India has imposed an anti-dumping duty of $217 per metric ton on imports of isopropyl alcohol (tariff item 2905 12 20) from China and several other countries.
This decision follows the findings of the designated authority.The investigation revealed that isopropyl alcohol was being exported to India at prices below normal value, constituting dumping that has caused material injury to the domestic market.
The authority determined that the landed prices of these imports significantly undercut the selling prices of domestic producers, prompting recommendations for the imposition of anti-dumping duties to mitigate the adverse effects on local manufacturers. The government's action is backed by provisions of the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, which allows for the protection of domestic industries from unfair trade practices.

In exercising its authority under subsections (1) and (5) of section 9A of the Customs Tariff Act, along with rules established in 1995 regarding the identification, assessment, and collection of anti-dumping duties, the Central Government has officially set this duty. The measure is aimed at not only alleviating injury to the domestic industry but also ensuring fair competition in the market.
The imposed anti-dumping duty will apply to all relevant imports, effectively impacting the pricing dynamics and competitive landscape of the isopropyl alcohol market in India. The anti-dumping duty outlined in this notification will be effective for a period of five years from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, unless it is revoked, superseded, or amended before that time. The duty will be payable in Indian currency.
