India created over 12 crore e-way bills in March 2025, the highest ever in a single month since the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system was introduced in 2017. This is a 20% increase compared to February and shows strong business activity at the end of the financial year.

E-way bills are digital documents used to track the movement of goods worth more than Rs. 50,000. They help ensure proper tax payment and are often seen as a sign of how active the goods economy is, especially in business-to-business trade.

Experts believe the sharp increase happened because businesses were clearing their stock, closing their books, and trying to meet yearly targets before March 31. Improved tax compliance and stronger action against GST fraud have also contributed to the rise in e-way bill numbers.

This record may lead to a boost in GST collections for March, which will be reported on May 1. Last year, in April 2024, GST collections reached Rs. 2.10 lakh crore. With the current momentum, this year may set a new record.

Many are hopeful but some experts say e-way bills only reflect the movement of goods, not services. They add that actual GST revenue depends on invoice values and payments, so the true impact will be clearer once the official numbers are out.

Still, the 12 crore e-way bills show a strong finish to the 2024-25 financial year and suggest that the government may be headed for another milestone in GST collections.
