INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY THEME 2024

The 2024 theme for International Customs Day, “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose,” mirrors the dynamic character of Customs operations within the context of today’s global landscape and the relationships.

Canada Border Services Agency ( CBSA ) stated that “As our world continues to rapidly evolve, this year’s theme “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose” highlights the importance of relationships. These allow information, data and intelligence to be shared among partners and enables the CBSA to better deliver on its mandate to protect and ensure the security and prosperity of Canadians.”

HISTORY

In 1983, the World Customs Organization officially established International Customs Day to recognize and raise awareness about the vital role of customs officials in global trade, security, and economic development. The chosen date, January 26th, commemorates the establishment of the Customs Co-operation Council ( now the WCO ) in 1952.

Customs, with ancient roots, originated from early civilizations imposing duties on traded goods. The Silk Road, for example, featured customs points regulating commerce. As global trade expanded, standardised customs procedures became crucial. The creation of international customs agreements, exemplified by the founding of the World Customs Organization in 1952, facilitated collaboration among customs authorities, fostering best practices and addressing emerging challenges.

International Customs Day serves as a platform to honour customs officials, raise awareness about their critical role, and promote collaboration and innovation in customs operations. It is a day to recognize the impact of customs activities on global trade, economic development, and the overall well-being of nations.
