IRDAI issues Guidelines on Insurance Claims of victims of Cyclone Nisarga [Read Notification]

The Insurance Regulatory Board and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued the Insurance industries on how to take immediate steps to mitigate the disasters of the insured population by ensuring immediate registration and settlement of eligible claims.

This includes setting up of Nodal Officers for affected states, co-ordination of activities with the Chief Secretaries of concerned states, publicizing relevant information regarding through media and state channels to enable filing of claims, starting of 24/7 helplines, etc. The Insurers are also encouraged to make claims electronically wherever possible for correspondence. All non-life insurers are also advised to submit information related to Cyclone Nisarga insurance claims to General Insurance Council.

Nisarga was the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Indian state of Maharashtra in the month of June since 1891. Nisarga caused six deaths in Maharashtra, including three in Pune. Initial damage was estimated to be Rs.50 billion.
