The Government has officially extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns ( ITRs ). The Income Tax Department has issued a press release announcing the extension, which comes as no surprise to taxpayers and professionals.
The delay in releasing the updated ITR forms, coupled with the unavailability of the corresponding filing utilities, had raised widespread concerns. The extension provides much-needed relief and additional time for filing the returns.
Even though the due date extended the experts found flaws in the press release as it was silent on the due date extension on the returns which required audit filing.

CA Atul Modani commented that “In this press release you should have mentioned by which date the utilities will be available so that tax professionals could have planned the work schedule accordingly. Extension without knowing when tax returns filing will go live is a half hearted announcement.”
Many professionals were satisfied with the extension in due date, however, they’re requesting the department to issue the utilities as early as possible.
One commented against the department that “You shouldn’t have extended the date. Now everyone will come for July filing in September, and we won’t be able to do tax audits properly. This is an unnecessary disaster. You could have announced an extension in late July.”

Another person opined that “57 days already passed, efilling utility not made available till date. 45 days extension even without starting of actual filling not make any sense.”

The CBDT stated that one of the main justifications for the delay was the requirement for more time for system development, integration, and testing of the e-filing tools. In addition, it is anticipated that TDS credits for statements that were due by May 31, 2025, will only begin to appear in early June, greatly reducing the effective filing window in the absence of the extension. The department has promised that an official announcement on the extension will be sent out soon.
Although the extension to September 15, 2025, gives professionals and taxpayers more time to meet the updated ITR filing standards, some stakeholders want more transparency due to the absence of complete information on audit cases dates.
