The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) writes to the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the due date of Income Tax Returns (ITR) Filing to 31st August 2023. The due date is 31st July 2023. i.e., today.

The letters mentioned that the tax payers in non audit cases are required to file the return of income under Section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961 by 31/07/2023. The taxpayers and their consultants are facing some difficulties in preparing and uploading the return of income.

The representation mentioned that the Form 26AS, AIS and TIS, which has to be matched with the ITR was made available in the month of June 2023. Also, the salaried taxpayers and the retired pensioners did not get the Form No. 16 in respect of income salaries and the TDS certificates issued for the TDS from salary or pension and interest and dividend income.

The letter also mentioned that “Many times it is observed that the employers and the banks do not issue TDS certificates in time. In the case of the taxpayers having income from business or profession, there is a problem of TDS rot being reflected in Form NO. 26AS bocause the deductors whose books are required to be audited have deducted the tax but not deposited in Government Account. They deposit the tax before their due date of filing of their return of income which is at a later date i. , 31.10.2023.”

The association also took into account other challenges faced by tax filers and professionals, such as floods, lack of electricity supply, and transportation issues, among others. Also mentioned the health issues of the people due to viral fever and climate. In many cases, the books of accounts have been destroyed due to flood.

Based on the challenges highlighted by taxpayers and professionals, the traders association urged the ministry to take these issues into consideration and extend the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) from 31st July 2023 to 31st August 2023.

As of July 30, 2023, a total of 6,13,08,944 (over 6 crores) Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed, and out of these, 3,36,08,010 (over 3 crores) verified ITRs have been processed by the department. Despite some server downtimes on the portal, many professionals have commented that the filing experience was smoother compared to previous years.
