The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has announced an indefinite strike starting today (March 25, 2025) to protest the decision of the Supreme Court Collegium to repatriate Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma to his parent High Court in Allahabad. The move follows mounting controversy over unaccounted cash stash alleged to have been recovered from his official residence in Delhi following a fire.
The issue has gained widespread media and public attention due to the allegations leveled against Justice Varma, a senior judge of Delhi High Court who has now been relieved from judicial duties following the controversies.

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recently recommended the transfer of Justice Varma back to the Allahabad High Court, a decision that has met the ire of the regional high court bar association. Association President Anil Tiwari stated, “The lawyers of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association will go on an indefinite strike from Tuesday against the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma. This decision is unacceptable, and we will fight it till the end.” He also called upon bar associations in Lucknow to join the protest.
The controversy surrounding Justice Varma erupted on March 14 when a fire broke out at the storeroom of his Lutyens’ Delhi residence wherein it was alleged that firefighters discovered a massive stash of unaccounted money which had been partially burnt. An inhouse inquiry was immediately launched by the Apex Court.
The Supreme Court, in an unprecedented move, published the entire correspondence between the Chief Justice of India, the Delhi High Court Chief Justice, and Justice Varma on their official website. Additionally, video footage and images from the incident were released, showing firefighters at the judge’s residence amidst the aftermath of the fire; the video also showed partially burnt ₹500 notes in the storeroom where the fire is said to have taken place.

In its resolution, the Allahabad Bar Association also demanded a review of all judgments delivered by Justice Varma to "restore the faith of the masses in the judicial system." Tiwari asserted that the association would not back down from its stance, stating, “We will not resume judicial work until the Supreme Court withdraws its decision. Even if we have to sacrifice our lives to save the judiciary, we are ready for it.”
The Allahabad Bar Association has also warned that if any oath commissioners or government advocates continue their work despite the strike, they may face disciplinary action.
While Justice Varma has denied any wrongdoings, calling the incident a ‘conspiracy’ to malign his reputation, strong media attention coupled with pressure from Bar Associations and prominent members of the legal fraternity suggests that we shall get to the bottom of this incident which has rocked the very foundation of the judiciary and all that it stands for.
