Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud said in a speech at a virtual inauguration ceremony for the administrative block and various e-initiatives of the Calcutta High Court that the judges should permit the young lawyers to use the electronic devices and internet access inside the courtrooms.

The CJI stated that any lawyer working on an iPad within the confines of the courtroom should be permitted to do so as long as they are not streaming movies on their electronic devices.

Justice stated that adoption of the technology is to meet the needs of the tomorrow as well. He spoke about the importance of technology in the area of judiciary.

He said “We at the Supreme Court are also in the process of assessing the changes that our website requires. A periodic review and upgradation of the website will ensure that it remains user friendly, including for those who are physically challenged”.

The sitting Supreme Court (SC) justice has his own ideas and better perspectives for the future. He always looked forward to it and paved the path for coming generations. It is clear from his prior remarks and phrases that he backs the young lawyers in any way.

Everything in the modern world is online. With the relevant websites or platforms, you may find out the status of the cases, the orders or verdicts, etc. Comparing this to laws that were even drafted before Independence, this represents a significant advancement in the judiciary field.

While discussing the virtual district court inspection, he added that judges at all levels will undoubtedly applaud the decision because it will enable more effective record keeping and save valuable time.

The justice also discussed Phase III of the e-courts projects, referencing the union budget for 2023, which included more than 7,000 crores in funding from the central government. Also, he discussed effective ways to use such funds.

In reference to the project started by the SC, the chief justice stated that he would sincerely appeal to the Calcutta High Court to start publishing its rulings in plain and regional language so that locals may comprehend them.

Further on the e-SCR project, the CJI said that the system will ensure that the lawyers across the country do not have to spend a single rupee in accessing judgments of the top court i.e., SC. Also stated that the SC has now commenced transcription of oral arguments which are being converted into the transcripts and are provided to the lawyers at the end of the day.
