The Central government has approved the appointment of Justice Harish Tandon as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice officially notified the appointment on Friday (21 March, 2025) with Droupadi Murmu affirming the appointment.

Born on November 16, 1964, Justice Tandon completed his graduation from Calcutta University in 1983 and obtained his LL.B. degree in 1989, and enrolled as an advocate in September the same year. Following extensive practice in the Calcutta High Court dealing in civil and constitutional matters, Justice Tandon later expanded his practice across the City Civil Court, Debt Recovery Tribunal, and the Supreme Court of India.

Justice Tandon was elevated to the bench as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in April 2010, marking a significant milestone in his judicial career.

The process leading to Justice Tandon’s appointment began when the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recommended his elevation as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court on March 6, 2025.

Justice Tandon will assume charge from the date he takes office, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19, 2025.

Justice Tandon currently ranks seventh in the All-India Seniority of High Court Judges, including Chief Justices, and is a senior puisne judge in his parent High Court. Recognized for his judicial acumen, high ethical standards, and deep understanding of the law, the Collegium emphasized that he is “fit and suitable in all respects” for the role. His extensive experience in civil law, coupled with his reputation for fairness and integrity, made him the preferred choice for the position.
