Justice Joymalya Bagchi was officially sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India today (17-03-2025), following his appointment by the President of India under Article 124(2) of the Constitution. The oath ceremony was administered by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) at the Supreme Court premises in New Delhi.
Justice Bagchi’s elevation to the apex court was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, and his appointment was formally notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice on March 10, 2025. Before he served as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court, where he was known for his huge contributions to criminal and constitutional law.

Justice Bagchi was Born in West Bengal and had an illustrious academic background, earning his law degree from the University of Calcutta. He began his legal practice at the Calcutta High Court and later became a prominent advocate known for handling high-profile criminal and constitutional matters. He was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011, where he delivered several landmark judgments.

With a tenure extending over six years, Justice Bagchi is set to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 27, 2031, following the established seniority norms in judicial appointments. His tenure as CJI is expected to last until June 2023, making him the first Chief Justice from Calcutta since Justice Altamas Kabir, who retired in 2013.
