Under Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice Vibhu Bakhru, a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, as the Acting Chief Justice. This decision came as soon as Justice Manmohan, the current Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, assumed his position as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The formal notification, issued by the Union Government dated December 3, 2024, acknowledges Justice Bakhru’s leadership and expertise at the Delhi High Court. Justice Bakhru is expected to uphold the tradition of judicial excellence and contribute to the efficient functioning of the high court during this period of change.

Justice Bakhru was born in 1966 and is a distinguished jurist with a strong background in law and finance. He graduated from Delhi University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant before pursuing law. After being designated as a Senior Advocate in 2011, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2013 and became a Permanent Judge in 2015.

Known for his expertise in intellectual property and commercial law, Justice Bakhru has presided over important cases that have shaped legal discourse in these areas. This notification issued after President Droupadi Murmu’s approval, followed the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. The collegium’s resolution shows considerations of seniority, merit, integrity, and the need for good representation of the Delhi High Court in the Supreme Court.
