The Kerala State Cabinet exempted the houses measuring upto 645 sq.ft from tax exemption.

The Local Self-Government Department earlier this year issued an order, providing tax exemption to such houses from April 1. However, the order went through many technical issues as some self-government institutions did not accept the order and hence it was placed before the Cabinet for its approval.

The tax exemption applies to those included in the LIFE, Punargeha schemes. The LIFE Mission provides houses measuring less than 650 square feet.

Earlier, houses measuring 30 square metres belonging to the families of below- poverty line were given the benefit of tax exemption. The Kerala Government later extended the benefit of tax exemption to houses measuring 60 square meters.
