Maharashtra Govt Hikes Excise Duty on Beer

The Maharashtra State Government has increased the excise duty on beer supplied across the State to 25 per cent to mild beer and 35 per cent to strong beer.

Earlier, the excise duty on mild beer in the state was earlier Rs 33 per litre or 1.5 times of manufacturing cost, whichever is higher. It has now been increased to Rs 42 per litre or 1.7 times of manufacturing cost, whichever is higher.

The excise duty on strong beer has been increased from Rs 60 to Rs 80 per litre or 235 per cent of manufacturing cost, whichever is higher. The prices will vary from brand to brand and the exact prices will be known within a few days.

The proposal to hike the tax rates on beer were approved in July. The new rate will come into effect from 23rd October 2017.
