A tweet by Chartered Accountant Akhil Pachori caused panic among members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India ( ICAI ). The tweet claimed that ICAI had introduced a new rule requiring all its members to appear for an exam every three years to continue their membership.
According to the tweet, the exam would consist of three papers of 100 marks each. To pass, members would need to score at least 150 marks in total with a minimum of 40 marks in each paper. It also stated that failure to clear the exam would result in the cancellation of ICAI membership.

The tweet mentioned that ICAI would issue a formal notification on “31st April 2024,” a date that does not exist which should have raised suspicion. Despite the unusual date, the tweet quickly went viral and led to confusion and anxiety among chartered accountants, students, and professionals.

Many believed the information to be true and expressed frustration and concern on social media. Reactions poured in across platforms with some questioning the decision and others trying to verify the news.

Later in the day, CA Akhil Pachori clarified that the tweet was meant as an April Fool’s Day joke. Soon after, ICAI also posted an official message confirming that no such exam requirement had been introduced. They reassured everyone that the tweet was false and wished their members a Happy April Fool’s Day.
