The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, through the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) has announced the appointment of six Senior Advocates as Additional Solicitors General (ASG) for India in the Supreme Court.

The appointments have been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and shall be effective for a tenure of three years from the date of assumption of office or until further orders, whichever may be earlier.

The Senior Advocates who have received the appointment towards being Additional Solicitors General are S. Dwarakanath, Archana Pathak Dave, Satya Darshi Sanjay, Brijender Chahar, Raghavendra P. Shankar, and Rajkumar Bhaskar Thakare (Raja Thakare).

The appointment of Additional Solicitors General is a crucial part of the legal administration framework in India, as the Additional Solicitors General shall assist the Solicitor General and Attorney General of India in defending the position of the Union of India in critical legal matters before the Supreme Court.

Additional Solicitors Generals are primarily responsible for arguing cases on behalf of the government, providing legal opinions to ministries, drafting submissions, while ensuring that the government's stance is effectively presented in constitutional and statutory matters spanning across the arenas of policy challenges, tax disputes, regulatory issues, and constitutional interpretations.

They also extensively liaise with top government officials and provide advice to the many nodes of the Government on legal strategies and matters of litigation, all to ensure that the interests and motives of the Government are represented well before a Court of Law.

The notification dated 09.09.2024 was issued by Kundan Nath, Under Secretary (EO.SM-II), Department of Personnel & Training while the Secretary of the Department of Legal Affairs, Dr. Rajiv Mani also endorsed the communication.

The communication was formally conveyed to key government offices, including the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Cabinet Secretariat, and the Guard File.
