In a major update in the National Herald case, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi has issued notices to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. These notices have been sent in connection with a money laundering case that is currently being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The court's action comes after the ED filed a detailed chargesheet in the case, accusing the Gandhis and several other senior Congress figures of being involved in financial irregularities.

According to the ED, the case is about the alleged misuse of funds and illegal acquisition of assets belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), a company that used to publish the National Herald newspaper. The ED claims that the assets, valued at over Rs. 2,000 crore, were fraudulently taken over by a private company named Young Indian, in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi hold large stakes.

The chargesheet also names other well-known Congress leaders, including the late Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes, and associates Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey, as well as the company Young Indian. The ED alleges that this was part of a criminal conspiracy and money laundering operation carried out using political influence.

During the hearing, Special Judge Vishal Gogne stated that it is important to give the accused a fair opportunity to respond before the court officially accepts the charges. The ED had argued that it was not necessary to hear the accused at this point in the process. But the judge disagreed and stressed that a fair trial requires that all accused be given a chance to speak before any further legal steps are taken. The court ordered that formal notices be issued to all the accused so they can appear in court and present their side.

The judge also pointed out that some important documents were missing from the ED’s chargesheet. He directed the agency to file these documents before the next hearing, stating that complete and transparent documentation is necessary for the court to move forward responsibly.

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 8, 2025. On this date, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and the other accused individuals will have the opportunity to appear in court and respond to the charges. The court will then decide whether to officially take notice of the charges and proceed with the trial.
