In a statement to the Rajya Sabha dated March 14, 2023, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary made it clear that professionals are not restricted from obtaining Goods and Services Tax (GST) Registration if they operate from residential premises.

While answering the question whether it is a fact that Management consultants, architects and other professionals operating from their homes are not allowed to get GST numbers for working from the residential premises, the minister stated that the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 does not restrict GST registration of Management consultants, Architects and other professionals operating from residential premises due to covid-19 pandemic or otherwise.

Businesses must register as regular taxable persons under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) if their annual revenue exceeds the threshold limit of Rs. 40 lakh, Rs. 20 lakh, or Rs. 10 lakh, as applicable. GST registration is the term for it.

Using the GST portal, you can register for GST. Form REG-01 must be used to submit a GST registration request.

  • PAN of the Applicant
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Proof of business registration or Incorporation certificate
  • Identity and Address proof of Promoters/Director with Photographs
  • Address proof of the place of business
  • Bank Account statement/Cancelled cheque
  • Digital Signature
  • Letter of Authorization/Board Resolution for authorised Signatory

The address of the place of business is vital for the GST registration. As per the statement of the minister, there is no restriction for the taxpayer to register in his residential address if he is operating the business in his private premises.
