The Press Information Bureau ( PIB ) of India recently issued a clarificatory Tweet on X (formerly Twitter), affirming that no new ₹7 Coin in honour of former Captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set to be introduced.

A doctored and possibly AI-generated image showing a gold-coloured Rupee coin bearing inscription of ‘7’ and ‘MS Dhoni’ on one side and the likeness of the former Captain along with the tagline ‘TROPHY COLLECTOR’ on the other side has been widely circulated on social media in recent days.

In the image is a caption stating “RBI to issue new ₹7 coins in honor of Mahendra Singh Dhoni; ‘Thala’ shines once again for a reason”.

The Department of Economic Affairs has reaffirmed that they have not issued any announcement indicating the introduction of such a coin, in honour of the legendary batsman-wicket keeper’s contributions to Indian Cricket.

While historical numismatics reveal the carvings and inscriptions of numerous rulers on currency, the modern era has seen many commemorative coins bearing the likeness of influential personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Mother Teresa.

Though not widely circulated, these coins serve as a reminder of the movers and shakers who shaped the nation into what it is today. ‘Captain Cool’, revered by many as a symbol of resilience, leadership, tenacity and hard work has been highly influential in the modern era of cricket, with his fabled tales resonating across generations of fans of the game.

At the moment, we can confirm that ‘Thala’ will not be part of the Indian currency series, however the last of his overs are yet to be played!
