RBI – Banks – Shift – bank.in – Domains – October 31 – taxscan

In a strong push to make online banking safer and more trustworthy, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked all banks to switch their websites to a new and secure domain—‘.bank.in’—by October 31, 2025.

This move is aimed at protecting customers from rising digital fraud and phishing attacks. In a circular issued on April 22, the RBI addressed all commercial banks, urban co-operative banks, and state and district co-operative banks, urging them to begin migrating their existing websites to the new domain without delay.

The decision follows a policy announced in February this year that introduced ‘.bank.in’ and ‘.fin.in’ domains exclusively for financial institutions. These domains are designed to offer a safer space on the internet for digital banking, helping people easily identify genuine bank websites.

The transition will be overseen by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), with support from the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. IDRBT will help banks with the technical and procedural aspects of registration and migration. Banks have been advised to reach out to IDRBT at sahyog@idrbt.ac.in to get started.

“This initiative is all about building trust,” said Shailendra Trivedi, Chief General Manager-in-Charge at RBI. “By moving to a verified domain, we’re not just tightening cybersecurity, we’re also giving customers more confidence when they bank online.”

With internet banking now deeply woven into everyday life, the RBI's move is being seen as a timely and necessary step to secure India's digital financial ecosystem. The central bank has clearly stated that banks must complete the migration no later than October 31, 2025.

For millions of users who rely on online banking for daily transactions, the new domain will act as a trusted marker—making it easier to spot authentic bank websites and avoid falling prey to scams.
