This issuance is a routine update in the legal tender of currency notes to reflect the signature of the current Governor, as is customary whenever a new head of the apex bank assumes office. The RBI confirmed that there will be no changes in the design or security features of the new ₹20 notes. These upcoming notes will remain identical in all respects to the existing ₹20 notes already in circulation under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.
The Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series was introduced in 2016 following demonetisation and has since become the standard design for Indian currency. These notes are characterized by features such as enhanced security elements, color schemes, and size variations for easy identification. The ₹20 note in this series, first introduced in 2019, features a motif of Ellora Caves on the reverse side, representing India's cultural heritage, and is predominantly greenish-yellow in colour.
The RBI has stated that all previous ₹20 denomination notes issued under earlier Governors, including those from both the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series and older series, will continue to be legal tender. This means that the public can continue to use the old ₹20 notes without any concern, and banks or businesses are required to accept them.
