A shocking turn of events unfolded in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Sector 5 as brothers Amit Gupta and Sumit Gupta, prominent residents and industrialists, were apprehended on allegations related to a massive GST fraud amounting to Rs 5000 crore.
The arrest came after a complaint lodged by Union of India Intelligence Officer GST Dinesh Kumar, sparking a high-profile legal battle.
The development saw the Special Judge of Economic Offenses, Saudamani Singh, ordering their arrest late on Tuesday evening, following their transit remand to the city by police officials.
Advocates representing both parties engaged in a fierce legal showdown during their court appearance, with one side contesting the remand while the other pressed for it. After a deliberation that stretched into the night, the court ruled in favor of remanding both Amit and Sumit to judicial custody, effectively sending them to jail.
The initial arrest and subsequent court proceedings unfolded swiftly, with the duo appearing before the Alipore CJM before being brought back to Kolkata on transit remand until the 10th of April.
The accusations against the brothers paint a picture of an elaborate scheme involving around 90 fictitious companies, allegedly used to generate fake bills worth Rs 3,000 crore. This maneuver is said to have defrauded the government of GST funds amounting to a staggering Rs 5000 crore.
The case gains further complexity with hints of their connection to Shiva Debra, an industrialist with a history of legal entanglements, as per allegations. As investigations deepen and legal proceedings advance, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on this high-value financial misconduct case, sending ripples through Kolkata’s business and legal communities.
