France becomes the First European country to accept UPI

NPCI International Payments Limited ( NIPL ) in partnership with Lyra, a French leader in securing e-commerce and proximity payments, has announced the acceptance of Unified Payments Interface ( UPI ) payment mechanism in France starting with the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Indian tourists can now book their visit to the Eiffel Tower by purchasing tickets online using UPI, making the transaction process quick, easy, and hassle-free. The official announcement was made in Paris at an event organized by the Indian Embassy  in France to celebrate the Republic Day of India.

This development, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, not only signifies the integration of historic ties with modern digital technology but also bolsters bilateral economic relations between India and the two nations.

At a virtual ceremony attended by Prime Minister Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth, India’s RuPay card services were launched in Mauritius. Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about the potential of these fintech services, emphasizing their role in uniting partners with India. This expansion aligns with India’s commitment to a “neighborhood first policy,” fostering digital ties that transcend geographical boundaries.

Sri Lanka, too, embraced the UPI services with enthusiasm. In a bid to strengthen the ties between the two nations, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the revolutionary change brought about by India’s digital public infrastructure. He expressed confidence that Sri Lanka and Mauritius would benefit significantly from the UPI system, emphasizing India’s continuous commitment to supporting its neighbors in various capacities.

The rollout of UPI services in Mauritius and Sri Lanka allows Indian nationals traveling to these destinations and Mauritian nationals visiting India to enjoy the convenience of seamless UPI settlement services.

This expansion not only benefits travelers but also opens up opportunities for merchants in Mauritius and Sri Lanka. As UPI gains acceptance, merchants in the tourism and retail sectors can offer a convenient payment option, making it easier for tourists to book accommodations, visit museums, and explore various attractions remotely.

The extension of RuPay and UPI services to Mauritius and Sri Lanka marks a significant milestone in India’s digital outreach. By fostering financial connectivity, the initiative not only strengthens economic ties but also enhances the overall travel experience for individuals from the participating nations.
