SEBI appoints Madhabi Puri Buch as First Woman Chief [Read Notification]

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has appointed its first female chairperson named Madhabi Puri Buch. She has been appointed for a three-year tenure and replaced Ajay Tyagi, whose appointment ended on February 28.

In a Notification issued by SEBI said that, Madhabi Puri Buch, Former Whole Time Member, Securities and Exchange Board of India as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), initially for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Madhabi Puri Buch is a graduate of St Stephen’s College and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, Buch started her 20-year stint in ICICI Bank as a project finance analyst and went on to become the executive director—part of the fab six led by the then chief executive K.V. Kamath. In 2011, Buch quit as the managing director and chief executive of ICICI Securities.

She joined Sebi as a whole-time member in April 2017 and demitted office in October. She headed the divisions for collective investment schemes surveillance and investment management, which include mutual funds and alternative investment funds.
